Grief and Bereavement

We all experience a form of loss or change at some point in our lives. Death, loss, and endings can impact the way we function on an emotional, physical, social, or spiritual level. Even positive changes, such as finishing education, starting a relationship, or moving to a new home, can bring up a variety of feelings. Bereavement and grief looks differently for each person and each different context. Grief can also be complicated depending on the circumstances of the loss.

Common symptoms of grief can be physical, emotional or social.

Common symptoms of grief, loss, and bereavement include:

Physical

  • Crying and sighing
  • Headaches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue

Emotional

  • Feelings of sadness and yearning
  • Feelings of worry or anger
  • Feelings of frustration or guilt

Social

  • Feeling detached from others
  • Self-isolation from social contact
  • Behaving in ways that are not normal for you

Whatever your symptoms are, therapy is effective in helping cope with loss and bereavement. Part of healing includes finding ways to adjust to a new way of living and searching for meaning in life and loss.
